Hypothyroidism: It Can Make You Sick!

The symptoms of hormone imbalance are not just due to our female hormones like progesterone and estrogen. Hormone imbalance usually includes many hormones, none more important than the thyroid.  The thyroid is a major hormone.   If it does not function properly for an extended period of time….you can die.

When thyroid levels are low it is called hypothyroidism.  Symptoms of hypothyroidism are rapid weight gain and swelling, which usually begins around the face and moves downward through our connective tissues, creating thick skin.   Extreme sensitivity to hot and cold and increased susceptibility to infections are also the result of a low thyroid.

It is crucial for your thyroid hormones to be working properly to ensure that the rest of your hormones can function properly as well.  So any blood test you have to look  for hormone imbalance should begin with a check of your thyroid levels.

Thyroid imbalances will not only affect your physical well being, but also your emotional state.  All organs of the body can be affected by the thyroid, from the hair on your head to the toes on your feet!

There is a long list of additional symptoms of low thyroid:  chronic pain, fatigue, dry skin, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, sleep apnea, constipation, missing one third of eyebrows, hair loss, cystic breasts and/or ovaries, osteoporosis, slow speech, hoarseness, cavities, TMJ syndrome, swollen gums, rotting teeth and high cholesterol levels.

The list goes on and on:

Low thyroid can cause asthma, which can lead to those increased infections, even pneumonia.

Low thyroid causes dry skin due to decreased circulation.  Eczema, psoriasis and teenage acne can all be symptoms of hypothyroidism.

Even hair is affected by a low thyroid and significant hair loss in women is becoming more common due to having low thyroid hormones.

As you can see, you should be very concerned about your thyroid levels if you feel you have a hormone imbalance.  The first step to helping yourself and obtaining the balance you need is to get your thyroid functioning adequately again.

Hypothyroidism will only get worse as each year passes.  The time to act is now.

  1. Thyroid hormone is needed by every cell of your body. Without it, cells cannot function normally—this is why thyroid hormone deficiency can cause problems in every body system. Thyroid hormone is the main hormone responsible for your metabolism and energy level. It’s also critical for normal immune function, as well as healthy skin, hair, and nails.
