The Benefits and Side Effects of Black Cohosh

Black cohosh is a herbal remedy. One of the reasons that women use black cohosh is to curb the discomfort and aggravation of some of the symptoms of menopause.

Menopause can be a very, very difficult time for a woman.  Finding relief from symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats and strong menstrual cramps can become a womans primary focus when she is suffering.  Black cohosh has been shown to curb these symptoms.

It is believed that black cohosh works by lowering the levels of luteinizing hormone, which many believe cause menopause troubles when it’s levels are raised.  So taking black cohosh and reducing the levels of luteinizing hormone will lessen your uncomfortable menopause symptoms.  It has been reported that hot flashes are less severe when black cohosh is taken.

Black cohosh is also an anti-inflammatory herbal remedy.  It brings relief to muscle aches and pains.  Some people treat their coughs with black cohosh because it dries up body mucous.  Tinnitus, a constant ringing in the ears, can also be treated with black cohosh.

Native Americans used black cohosh as a treatment for not only gynecological disorders, but also sore throats, kidney disorders and depression.

You should not take black cohosh if you are pregnant or nursing.  In addition, there are some unwanted side effects that have been reported with using it.  Liver damage (hepatitis) has been reported in a few persons who used the herb.  Others have used it for years with no such problem.  Black cohosh has not been directly linked to liver problems.  Other side effects include dizziness, nausea, constipation, diarrhea and headaches.

Black cohosh stimulates blood flow to the pelvic area, so it should not be taken during a womans menstual cycle as it may cause heavier bleeding and a greater likelihood for development of anemia.

Consult your doctor before taking black cohosh to ensure it does not conflict with any of your present medical conditions or medications.
